Study Tourism, Engage Communities, Create Change Ming Chuan Tourism Sophomore Course “Tourism Geography and World Cultural Heritage”
Integrating University Social Responsibility (USR) and service-learning, the entire class stepped into Fuyuan Village, Guishan, to accompany senior citizens in learning smartphone functions. From photo taking and editing, to using Line and everyday applications, students provided one-on-one instruction—helping elders bridge the digital divide while gaining a deep sense of accomplishment.
Student reflection: “It’s the first time I realized I could help others like this—such a rewarding experience!” A senior smiled and said: “Young people are so thoughtful! I really learned something today!”
This was more than a volunteer activity—it was an opportunity for students to apply what they’ve learned, practice communication, cultivate cultural sensitivity, and truly understand the connection between people and place.
Tourism is not only about scenery; it is about seeing people’s needs. This course empowers students to move from learners to actors—bringing knowledge from the textbook to real-world community settings.
